Recent Coal Export Trends: Q2 2014

Here’s a look at the latest US Department of Energy figures in its quarterly coal export report, which take us up through the second quarter of 2014:

Nationally, coal exports fell again in the second quarter of 2014.

The US exported almost 24.6 million tons of coal in the second three months of the year. It was still a lot by historical standards, but it represented the fifth straight quarterly decline and a  reduction of 35 percent from the industry’s high water mark in the second quarter of 2012.

Recent Coal Export Trends: Q1 2014

The US Department of Energy just released new figures in its quarterly coal export report. Here’s what happened up through the first quarter of 2014:

Nationally, coal exports were down slightly in the first quarter of 2014.

The US exported almost 27.7 million tons of coal in the first three months of the year, which is a lot by historical standards. Yet even so it represented a nearly 13 percent decline from the first quarter of 2013.

The Western Customs Region, center stage in the ferocious debate over expansion capacity, remains a minor player in the national coal exports scene, but coal shipments increased there a bit. The West Coast exported a bit less than 2.3 million tons, 3.3 percent more than the previous quarter.

Recent Coal Export Trends: Q4 2013

Late last week, the US Department of Energy released new figures in its quarterly coal export report. Here’s what happened up through the end of the year, 2013:

Nationally, coal exports were down nearly 3 percent in the final quarter of 2013.

Overall in 2013, the US exported almost 118 million tons of coal. It was unquestionably a lot by historical standards, but even so it represented a 7 percent decline from the record export levels of 2012.

The Western Customs Region, center stage in the ferocious debate over expansion capacity, is currently only a minor player in the national coal exports scene. The West Coast exported roughly 2.2 million tons in the fourth quarter of 2013, about 5 percent less than the previous quarter. Just so, total export figures for 2013 also registered about 5 percent lower than they did in 2012.

Recent Coal Export Trends: Q2 2013

The government shutdown did not prevent the EIA from releasing new energy data yesterday. The figures in the latest coal report take us up through the end of June 2013:

Nationally, coal exports tailed off a bit. The US shipped nearly 29.4 million tons of coal in the second quarter of 2013. By historical standards, that’s a lot.

Recent Coal Export Trends: Q1 2013

We have new quarterly data in the latest coal report from the US Energy Information Administration, taking us up through the end of March 2013:

Nationally, coal exports notched up after two consecutive quarters of decline. The US shipped nearly 32 million tons of coal in the first quarter of 2013. That’s a lot by historical standards.

Recent Coal Export Trends: Q4 2012

I’m a bit late getting to this, but here’s quarterly data from the latest coal report from the US Energy Information Administration, taking us up through the end of 2012:

Nationally, the big story was that coal exports fell for the second consecutive quarter. By the end of 2012, quarterly shipments were down by 25 percent from the historic highs registered during the second quarter. Still, at 28 million tons, coal exports remained very high by historical standards.

A bit player in the national coal export story, the Western Customs District exported a little more than 2.1 million tons in the fourth quarter, a 16 percent increase from the third quarter.

Recent Coal Export Trends: Q3 2012

Here’s data from the latest coal report from the US Energy Information Administration, taking us up through the end of September 2012:

Nationally, the big story is that coal exports fell in the third quarter by 15 percent from the historic highs registered during the second quarter. Still, at 31.5 million tons, coal exports remained higher than at any other time in recent history.
