In response to my post about December’s snowstorm, “Snow Days and Social Capital,” a friend sent along a tale of how he and several friends telemarked their way around the city on that Sunday. Their route-which included Pike Place Market–is mapped here.
This photo is the evidence.
I couldn’t *not* share it.
The photographer, by the way, is John Mauro, director of Cascade Bike Club’s Commute Programs. And the guy doing the telemark turn is Ross Freeman, who usually skis and works at Stevens Pass as the ski area’s Environment and Sustainability Manager.

Brilliant.I missed your first post at the time, but Eli Sanders at the Stranger had some similar comments too…

I was in the middle of moving when the storm hit. I was frustrated that the snow and ice kept me from moving all of my belongings for a few days, but loved that it helped me meet all my new neighbors as we all gathered to sled, ski, and even snowboard down the steep hills of lower Queen Anne. I felt more at home then than I had for the past year at my last apartment.

Great photo. I understand people get frustrated when snowed in, but in general, I think we’ve lost the ability to use our own two feet and ingenuity when it comes to dealing with situations like this. We rely on our cars way too much. Obviously, we’d like emergency vehicles to be able to get around, but otherwise, I’d like to have a city where people live close to where they work so that when they can’t drive they can ski or walk or snowshoe or telecommute or take a few days off. There are other options.
