When Victoria’s daily paper asked readers to imagine a new, less-colonial-sounding name for the province, the winner was “North Cascadia.” How ’bout that?

I’m originally from Victoria, BC – home of the publication you linked to above – but have been living overseas. I found this article fabulously entertaining and I’m glad to learn that the people in my hometown had this discussion. In fact I felt a bit vindicated, even personally gratified, by the fact that North Cascadia won. In my time away from home, it seems that no matter where I go in the world, the people I can relate to the most easily are the ones I meet who just happen to also be from the west coast (ie Cascadia). Whether they hold Canada or USA passports, and no matter what part of the world their parents come from, I really feel more of a bond of a common background or cultural connection with these people than with any others. I love the name North Cascadia for the province that I come from, because it acknowledges my cultural reality: though technically “Canadian”, I’m much more connected with people from up and down the west coast, both north and south of the 49th parralel, than I am with people from other parts of Canada. Thanks for including this link! It’s heartwarming! Geez maybe this means I’m homesick.
